Car flies 120ft through air after smashing into stationary tow truck ramp in Georgia

A motorist on a Georgia highway flew through the air after their car drove onto the ramp of a stationary tow truck while officers were responding to a separate crash.

Bodycam footage released by the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) shows officers at the scene of an unrelated crash along Highway 84 in the southern part of the state on May 24.

The video begins with police standing on one side of a motorway's central reservation, next to a vehicle that appears to have flipped over.

As an officer walks towards the wreckage, a car can be seen speeding toward a tow truck parked on the other side of the motorway.

The vehicle is then captured whizzing up the ramp of the tow truck, launching into the air and landing upright, scattering debris over the road.

The driver, a Florida woman, “survived but was hospitalised with serious injuries,” according to local media.

A police incident report said the car "vaulted" around 120 feet over the tow truck after launching off its ramp, Georgia TV station WSB-TV added.

While landing, the vehicle hit another car that was travelling along the highway at the same time, causing it to be thrown a further 23 feet after impact..

An LCSO officer was also taken to a local hospital after being hit by debris from the incident, according to the report.

The cause of the initial accident that drew a police presence to the area was not clear.

It is also uncertain whether the driver of the vehicle that crashed into the tow truck ramp will face any charges.
