Moment police pounce on sex offender who assaulted lone tube passenger

A 50-year-old man has been jailed for 20 months after sexually assaulting a woman on a train, following an investigation by the British Transport Police.

Body-worn camera footage shows the moment BTP officers intercepted the train as it arrived at Reading station, identified the man and quickly arrested him.

Edgar Junior, 50, of Barnsdale Road, Reading, pleaded guilty to sexual assault at Reading Crown Court on 12 January.

On 17 July he was sentenced to 20 months in prison and given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) for ten years, preventing him from causing unwanted attention to women or girls and from drinking alcohol in a public place.

On about 28 March 2022, Junior boarded an Elizabeth Line train at Paddington and sat in the two seats opposite the victim.

He began pointing at the victim and making sexual comments, prompting another passenger to challenge him and tell him to leave her alone.

The passenger left the carriage and Junior sexually assaulted the victim before continuing to make sexual comments and gestures.

His behaviour attracted the attention of a second passenger who attempted to speak to the victim and sat with her to reassure her.

The victim left the train and Junior was seen continuing to approach other women on the train, making them feel uncomfortable.

This was reported to British Transport Police who intercepted the train at Reading, identified him and arrested him at the scene.

Detective Inspector Marvin Bruno said: "Junior is a disturbing individual who brazenly and persistently sexually assaulted a woman while she was travelling alone on a train and the custodial sentence he's received shows how seriously these offences are taken.

"I am grateful to the bystanders who recognised his despicable behaviour and intervened to help before immediately reporting it to the police, which enabled our officers to intercept the train and arrest him.
