Series of explosions heard from building next to Old Bailey

Wednesday 7 February 2024

The Old Bailey has been evacuated after a series of explosions were heard from a building nearby.

Video posted to X shows smoke coming from the windows and fire engines on the scene.

Power has been cut in the court building and hearings had to be adjourned.

Black smoke was seen coming from windows in an area of the building where an electrical substation is believed to be.

Judge Mark Lucraft, the Recorder of London, told Times journalist David Brown he heard a "loud bang" and saw smoke, adding it was too early to say when cases will resume.

There are no reported casualties at this stage.
